The History of Uptown Butte

Forged in Copper. Fueled by Community.

Butte’s vibrant history is steeped in copper mining, immigration, labor struggles, and wild politics. A town of brick skyscrapers, built squarely on top of a thrumming honeycomb of 10,000 miles of tunnels of rich ore veins, helped power the nation and better the lives of working people across the vast Nation.

Butte’s copper mining surged as the United States embarked on electrification, making those growing mines and their copper ore essential to modern America. Butte’s copper not only lit up the country, but also armed US forces in both World War I and II.
